Scale

The Sherman BARV, or Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle, was a British conversion that replaced the turret with a tall armored superstructure, allowing the tank to wade in surf roughly nine feet deep. Crewed by REME recovery teams, its job was to push off stranded landing craft and drag drowned vehicles clear of the beach.

BARVs went ashore on D-Day and kept the Normandy beaches working in the days that followed. The idea was so successful that the British army kept beach recovery vehicles on Sherman and later Centurion chassis for decades after the war.

The Sherman BARV with its towering boat-shaped superstructure on an M4A2 hull, a unique and eye-catching D-Day beach piece.
