Sd.Kfz.3 Opel Maultier Half-Track Truck - WWII German Army

The Maultier, or Mule, was born out of the mud of the Eastern Front. Wheeled trucks bogged down hopelessly in the Russian rasputitsa, so the rear axle of standard trucks such as the Opel Blitz was replaced with a tracked running gear to create a cheap, practical half-track.

The Opel version was the most numerous of the Maultier family and hauled ammunition, fuel and rations wherever wheeled transport could not go. It served on every front from 1942 to the end of the war and was a familiar sight in German supply columns.
