The Marder I was born from necessity, mounting the 7.5cm Pak 40 anti-tank gun on captured French tracked chassis, mainly the Lorraine artillery tractor. An open-topped armored superstructure protected the crew from small-arms fire.

Most served with units stationed in France and fought against the Allied landings in Normandy in 1944. They turned surplus captured equipment into effective mobile anti-tank guns.
