Ford GPA Seep Amphibious Jeep - WWII US Army
The Ford GPA, nicknamed the Seep (short for sea jeep), was an attempt to give the famous quarter-ton jeep the ability to swim. Built on jeep running gear with a boat-shaped steel hull, a propeller and a rudder, it was meant to carry scouts and officers across rivers and from ship to shore.
Around 12,700 were built, but the Seep was heavy and low in the water, and American crews never fully warmed to it. It saw use in Sicily and Normandy, while thousands went to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease, where it proved so useful on rivers and marshes that the Soviets later built their own copy.
