The Sd.Kfz. 2 Kettenkrad was designed for the airborne troops - a half-tracked motorcycle small enough to fit in a Ju 52 transport, used to tow light guns and carry supplies.

In March 1945, Operation Plunder sent the British and American armies across the Rhine at Wesel - and among the defenders waiting for them were the Fallschirmjager of the German 1st Parachute Army. No longer used as airborne troops, the paratroopers had become elite ground infantry, fighting in their distinctive splinter-camouflage smocks and rimless helmets to the very end.

A Kettenkrad with rider and a passenger seated on the rear.
