The Ausf. A was the first production Panzer IV. Only 35 were built in 1937 and 1938, with thin armor, a distinctive cylindrical commander's cupola and the short 7.5cm KwK 37 gun meant to knock out anti-tank positions and bunkers.

Ausf. A tanks fought in Poland in 1939 and in Norway and France in 1940 before being withdrawn to training units.

The Panzerkampfwagen IV was the only German tank to stay in production from before the war until its end. Around 8,500 were built, and it fought on every front, growing from a short-barreled infantry support tank into the backbone of the Panzer divisions.

Captures the first-production hull with its early suspension and drum-style commander's cupola, plus a separate turret with the short 75mm gun.
