French Infantry Squad in Greatcoats - WWII French 1940
The French infantryman of 1940, the 'poilu' of a new war, marched into battle in the long double-breasted greatcoat and Adrian helmet that had changed little since 1918. Armed with MAS 36 and Berthier rifles, the infantry regiments held the line on the Meuse, the Somme and the Aisne against overwhelming odds.
In May and June 1940 the French Army faced the German Blitzkrieg with some of the best tanks in the world - the Char B1 bis, Somua S35 and a host of innovative designs - but was undone by outdated doctrine and the speed of the German advance. French soldiers fought hard at Stonne, Gembloux, Dunkirk and along the Weygand Line before the armistice.
A ten-man squad in buttoned greatcoats: kneeling riflemen, a grenade thrower, a charging soldier, men firing and a squad leader directing the fight.
