Afrika Korps MG34 Heavy Machine Gun Team on Lafette Tripod - WWII North Africa
On the tripod-mounted Lafette, the MG34 became a long-range heavy machine gun that could dominate the open desert out to two kilometres.
The Deutsches Afrikakorps landed in Libya in February 1941 under Erwin Rommel and fought across the Western Desert for more than two years, from the siege of Tobruk and the Gazala line to El Alamein and the final battles in Tunisia in 1943. Tropical uniforms, pith helmets, goggles and sun-bleached webbing made the Afrika Korps soldier instantly recognizable.
An MG34 on its Lafette tripod, crewed by a kneeling gunner, an observer pointing out targets and a loader with an ammunition belt - each crew figure in both pith helmet and steel helmet versions.
