The 81mm Model 35 mortar provided Italian battalions with reliable heavy fire support throughout the North African campaign.

Italy's soldiers carried the first years of the desert war, from the 1940 advance into Egypt to the hard fighting at Bir el Gubi, Tobruk and El Alamein. Divisions such as Ariete, Trieste and Folgore earned the respect of friend and foe alike, often fighting with equipment inferior to that of their enemies.
