Italy used the Swiss Solothurn 20mm anti-tank rifle in the desert - a heavy weapon that could still threaten light tanks and armored cars.

Italy's soldiers carried the first years of the desert war, from the 1940 advance into Egypt to the hard fighting at Bir el Gubi, Tobruk and El Alamein. Divisions such as Ariete, Trieste and Folgore earned the respect of friend and foe alike, often fighting with equipment inferior to that of their enemies.

Two prone gunners with long 20mm anti-tank rifles.
