Free French SMG Squad - Legion and Tirailleurs - WWII Free French Foreign Legion North Africa

Free French assault troops - Legionnaires and colonial Tirailleurs fighting side by side - carried submachine guns for the close fighting of raids and breakouts.

At Bir Hakeim in May and June 1942, the 1st Free French Brigade - Legionnaires of the 13th Demi-Brigade alongside colonial infantry from Africa and the Pacific - held out for sixteen days against Rommel's assault, buying precious time for the Eighth Army. The Legion's kepi, sash and desert kit became symbols of French resistance in the desert.
