General Marie-Pierre Koenig and his officers refused every demand to surrender at Bir Hakeim, finally breaking out through the encircling Axis lines on the night of 10 June 1942.

At Bir Hakeim in May and June 1942, the 1st Free French Brigade - Legionnaires of the 13th Demi-Brigade alongside colonial infantry from Africa and the Pacific - held out for sixteen days against Rommel's assault, buying precious time for the Eighth Army. The Legion's kepi, sash and desert kit became symbols of French resistance in the desert.

Two officers in kepis directing the fight with pistols.
