Scale

The Legion's NCOs - many of them veterans of years of colonial service - were famed for their toughness and discipline.

At Bir Hakeim in May and June 1942, the 1st Free French Brigade - Legionnaires of the 13th Demi-Brigade alongside colonial infantry from Africa and the Pacific - held out for sixteen days against Rommel's assault, buying precious time for the Eighth Army. The Legion's kepi, sash and desert kit became symbols of French resistance in the desert.

Two NCOs in kepis, one leading with rifle and one signaling.
