Stripped of its turret and fitted with a tall armored superstructure to keep the crew above the waterline, the BARV waded through the surf of Normandy pushing stranded vehicles clear of the beach and recovering bogged-down tanks under fire. Without the BARV, the Allied assault on the beaches would have ground to a halt in the shallows.
